Guest Post: Skin Care Loves

Hey Everyone,
Today the Lovely Anna from Dandelion Ashes has provided us with an interesting Guest Post all about her skincare loves. As a skincare addict I'm always interested in hearing about other people recommendations, so I have really enjoyed reading this post. Thanks Anna!

------------------------
Skin Care Loves
For the last year or so, I've been trying really hard to take care of my skin; when I was about 11 or 12 I never used to cleanse properly and when I first started wearing foundation I often used to go straight to bed without removing it – if I was feeling particularly virtuous I would “remove” my make-up using a toner. Because of all this abuse my skin suffered, I've got some seriously mucked up pores. My dirt goes deep; deeper than any product I've yet found can go. I've gone from really not caring about skin care to being completely obsessed, I'm always trying out new products and techniques but today I’d like to show you all the products I've either fallen completely in love with, or the products that I just keep going back to.
(A side note, I definitely have what you might call combination skin – my t-zone gets really oily, I suffer from bad blackheads all over my nose, my eyes are very sensitive, my cheeks are normal, but they can get dry or sensitive quite easily.)

Cleansers
Cleansing is probably the most important skin care step for everybody, especially for us oily skinned girls. A good cleanser should remove all of your make-up, and get deep down into your pores, and get rid of any dirt or bad oils that can cause spots. There are lots of different types of cleansers – lotions, creams, waters, gels, foams etc… Recently I've been loving the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish – it’s a cream cleanser that you apply to skin and then wash off with a muslin cloth, which gently exfoliates the skin, getting rid of any dead skin leaving you looking young and healthy. This isn't too harsh, so it would work for pretty much anyone, but it does a good enough job to leave my pores feeling thoroughly cleansed. You can buy it here for £14.75.

I also really love the Witch Oil Control Foaming Face Wash for days when I'm feeling oilier and spottier than usual. Foaming cleansers can be quite drying, so I wouldn't recommend them for anybody with dry skin. This cleanses deep into the pores and definitely controls the oil. It’s such a bargain that I would recommend any of you with oily skin to purchase it (also it smells so damn good). You can get it here for £3.99, but it’s often on offer in Superdrug.

Eyes
Although my Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish claims to be able to remove even the most stubborn of mascara, I have super sensitive eyes so when I find a product that works, I don’t like to try something else just in case I have a reaction to it. I get really bad hay-fever (and also I cry at pretty much every film), so waterproof mascara is a must for me. Unfortunately, this means that it’s often difficult to remove, but I love the Double Effect Eye Make Up Remover from Nivea – it melts away any eye make-up like a dream and doesn't sting my eyes at all. I would recommend doing this before cleansing, as it can leave an oily residue on the skin and also the cleanser can remove the panda eye effect that sometimes happens. You can get it here for £3.59 but there’s nearly always an offer on somewhere.

I won’t bang on too much about these next two products, as I recently did a blog post on them. But I’ve been loving the Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream and the Simple Refreshing Eye Roll On. They both do a great job at soothing tired and sore eyes and don’t sting at all. If you want to know more about them, then check out the blog post!

Toner
Toning is an essential part of your daily skin care routine, but I think it’s a nice step to take to feel extra clean. Toners basically just remove any residue left from your cleanser, and prepare your skin for moisturiser. You can get more hydrating toners for dry skin, purifying cleansers for oily skin and harsher toners for acne. Recently I've been using this toner spritz from Boots Botanics and I really love it; I find that the spritzer toners are far more refreshing and great for summer (I'm not really sure why, it’s probably psychological!). Also I love that it’s 100% organic and formulated without parabens. You can get this one here for £4.99.

Moisturiser
I cannot stress how important moisturising is. It’s a common misconception that if you have oily skin, you don’t need to moisturise. It may seem completely counter productive, but you really do! Often your skin produces excess oil because it’s dehydrated and it does this to rehydrate itself. If your skin is on the oilier side, then go for an oil-free moisturiser such as this one from Simple which I absolutely love. You can get it here for £4.27.

I also love the Soap and Glory Clear Here Lotion which almost acts as a primer as well as a moisturiser. It has more of a gel consistency and claims to help unblock pores and control oil. Unfortunately it’s discontinued, but I'm sure that another brand does a similar product.

Recently I was given some samples of Eucerin’s moisturiser for acne prone or oily skin and I really love it! I reckon that they’re a good dupe for the Soap and Glory lotion, as they have the same sort of consistency and feel the same on the skin. You can get it here for £9.25.

Masks
I love a good face mask, they’re an essential part of my pamper routine! I got bought this one from Origins for Christmas, and I think it’s great. It goes really deep into your pores to pull out any dirt or oil that’s in there and also it looks hilarious when it’s on! You can get it here for £22. I would only recommend this for oily skin, but there are loads of different masks out there for different skin types; the origins masks are usually great so if you’re willing to spend a bit more money, I would look into those.

The Lip Product Addict Tag

Hey Everyone,
Last week the lovely Aisling from 'Coveted Mess' Tagged me to do this post and of course I was delighted. Being a total Lipstick addict myself I look for any chance to discuss these products. So here it is:

1. Favourite balm/treatment?
At the moment it is the Balmi. I was lucky enough to be given some of these lip balms to put in the goodie bags for the meetup I organised last month and the coconut scent was in my bag. It is super nourishing and is great for the summer as it contains SPF15 as well as UVA/UVB protection. It can also be attached to your key chain so it's handy for carrying around, as well as smelling incredible.
2. Best eye-catching red?

It depends on my mood, If I'm feeling like going for a bright red I love the flormar lipstick in the shade 'L18'. Its a deep orange toned red that is bright and definitely makes a statement. On the other hand I also love a vampy dark red, my favourite being 'Cherry' from Sleek's True Colour collection it is just the most perfect wearable deep colour.

3. Best luxury & best drugstore?
I don't own too many luxury lipsticks. I must admit I don't think you can get more luxury than the YSL lipstick packaging or a classic Channel. Personally I love the lower end of the high end makeup, and think MAC do amazing lipsticks with so many different colours and finishes to choose from there is bound to be something for everyone. For drugstore I think L'Oreal have a great selection.

4. Best MAC Lipstick?

Again its impossible to pick just one but my most reached for nude is 'Creme Cup' (or it would still be if it hadn't gone missing a couple of months ago) it is so beautiful. My most reached for colour is 'Rebel', a purpley/pink colour which is so bold it will always make a statement.

5. The most disappointing?

I'm going to give a slightly controversial answer here as I know so many people love them but the Rimmel Apocalips. I just didn't get on with them, I have the shade 'Apocoliptic'. I found it to be really thick, it moved and even got dragged across my face from my hair in the wind. I just wasn't that impressed. After a recent recommendation I'm going to give them another shot and try applying a very thin layer and leaving it to dry for a while before leaving the house, so we shall see.

 5. Liner - Yes or no?

I'm going to agree with Aisling here and say with a nude lip, no. With a bright lip, yes.

6. Best gloss?

I'm not a huge wearer of gloss, I prefer either a lipstick or a balm. However Benefit have amazing glosses that I do love. I have the shade 'Hoola' which I got in a set and it is beautiful. It gives a sheer wash of colour, is not sticky or gloopy and makes the lips look and feel great. It also comes in more shades which correspond with some of Benefit most famous blushers.

7. Something extra?

I'm going to mention Benefit again here, I think they can really do no wrong at the minute they are just producing one amazing product after the next. Something I recently raved about was their new tint, 'Lolli tint'. It is the colour of the season in an amazing orchid/lilac shade, and the reason I'm mentioning it as my something extra is because it makes an incredible lip stain as well as being a cheek stain as it was intended.

Thanks so much again to Aisling for tagging me, I really enjoyed doing this post. I TAG EVERYONE reading this to do it, along with these lovely ladies:

Guest Post: How To Prepare a Relaxing Spa at Home

Hey Everyone,
A couple of weeks back I was approached by Izzy from http://thehomeofinspiration.blogspot.co.uk/. Who was looking to guest post, I was delighted to have her on board. Here is her post on creating a spa at home.

------------------------------

Why spend hundreds of pounds visiting a relaxing spa when you can create your very own spa at home?

You can not only create your own personal sanctuary but you can also create you own treatments! What more could you want?

Save those pennies and set up that spa you've always wanted to visit at home. If you've ever dreamed of going to a spa but never had the cash then look no further make your dream a reality, all the tips on preparing a relaxing spa at home are here…

Tidy up
So first things first, Lets get your bathroom clean and tidy just like a professional spa. You want your bathroom to be as minimalist as possible, so try and get rid of any clutter!

The thing is if you’re really hoping to relax then how is it possible if your surrounded by mess? Untidy bathrooms, tend to make you feel stressed or anxious so be ruthless and anything that is making the space look untidy get rid of!

Create your own treatments
Creating a spa on a budget is easy Home made remedies and treatments can work just as good as the ones that you come across in spas (if not better).

So why not have a go and create your own treatments, avocado, honey, yoghurt and aloe vera are all ingredients that many of us have lying around the house but combined with other household products they can make great face masks, moisturisers and lotions that are sure to make you feel like you've just stepped out the most expensive spa in town.

Always exfoliate!

Whatever spa you go to you’ll find exfoliating to be extremely important. You can get some good body scrubs from many toiletry shops or chemists, however you could try making your own by mixing some brown sugar, oats and olive oil. Simply apply it to your skin and scrubbing any dry areas and then simply wash it off, you’re sure to have lovely soft skin after!

Fresh towels

All spas have soft warm towels that are folded neatly in a pile for you to wrap yourself up with after your treatments! There is no reason why you can’t do the same at home! Fold your towels neatly or hang them over the radiator so they are lovely and warm!

Create your own sauna

Turn your shower into a sauna! Turn on your shower at it’s hottest for about 15/20 minutes! This will cause the steam to build up which will fill the room.

Using a flannel add a touch of one of your favourite scents of essentials oils and then put it over your face, this perfect especially if you're struggling with a cold as it help to clear the sinuses. A sauna is a perfect solution to help get over a stressful day and if you have some sauna time before bed your are almost guaranteed to sleep a lot better.
                                                   ---------------------------------------

Thanks to Izzy for the interesting guest post on creating a spa at home! What products would you recommend to include in your at home pamper evening?

Sculpt Cosmetics - Foundation and Concealer Palette Review

Hey Everyone,
recently there has been a lot of hype around concealer palette's for contouring and creating amazing looking, flawless skin like Kim Kardashian. Therefore when I was offered a chance to try one out by Sculpt Cosmetics I jumped at the chance.

I first tried the Oil Free Foundation. It states it is matte foundation however it is unlike any other I have tried. It has a very runny consistency and you have to really work it into the skin yet as you do it turns from its loose liquid form into a matte that blurs imperfections. It has a definite medium coverage, and due to the matte finish I would suggest making sure your skin is well prep-ed and moisturised as I found it can cling slightly to dry patches. I can say with absolutely no doubt in my mind that it was the best colour match I have ever found from a foundation. I have pasty Irish skin syndrome, basically meaning I can never find a foundation that is the right shade for me. Though this was bang on in the shade Linen.
Next I moved on the Concealer Colour Correcting Palette. I first took a slightly peachy toned colour to attempt to hide my very obvious dark circles, I found this to be pretty good with a great coverage. I then used the white and lightest shade to highlight... Running it down the centre of my nose, as well as on my brow and cheek bones. Then taking a darker shade to contour. The palette has a brilliant shade range and works brilliantly as a contour. It does set really fast which makes it long lasting however it means you have to work quickly when applying it. Lastly my top tip for using this palette would be to use a primer beforehand as I found it sunk into pores.
Overall the packaging is sleek, the products work, and have an amazing colour range. I would just bear in mind that you have to prep the skin a bit better than normal, (it might have just been my skin type and they may work perfectly on other skins) I found little things like the concealer sinking into my pores which stopped me completely loving these products. Having said that I would still recommend this for anyone looking for a concealer palette to contour as it works really well for that purpose.

You can find all their products on their website - Sculpt Cosmetics.

Friday Fashion: Hook Crochet

Hey Everyone,
I have a slightly different 'Friday Fashion' post for you today. Instead of an outfit post, I'm highlighting a new Irish designer I discovered during #Irishbizchat last week.

Niamh Colfer is a Crochet Crafter and Designer based on the Hook Peninsula in Co.Wexford. She recently set up her business called 'Hook Crochet'. If your now thinking "not another old fashioned Irish craft", your wrong! Niamh has modernised the technique and put a 21st century twist on an old classic. Inspired by her grandmother Eileen O'Leary, a noted needle worker Niamh crochets freestyle using old Irish lace techniques and create her own patterns, mostly fine crochet jewellery, formal bags, purses, lace gloves, headpieces, and other accessories. One of her most popular accessories at the moment is groomsmen buttonhole flowers.
The picture above is of Niamh on her wedding day wearing her grandmothers crochet lace dress, which was made by her great grandmother. She then made all the accessories for the entire bridal party and all of the table centres.
Above is some of Niamh's creations. Look out for another Fashion Friday post soon featuring an amazing pair of earrings from Hook Crochet

Happy Friday!

Summer Statements

Hey Everyone,
with the beautiful weather we are having today I couldn't help but think of summer, so I thought I would do a quick post on my favourite summer statements for this year...
This necklace is definitely out there, not for the shy or faint hearted. The bright yellow ensures its bang on trend and beads and ethnic style will stand out and be a point of topic for anyone you pass.

Stella&Dot is fast becoming one of my favourite online stores to browse, they pretty much have everything a girl would ever need when it comes to accessories. This statement necklace is my favourite of theirs at the moment. I love the colour and the usual mix of materials in the frills and beads.

Pink Sugar is run by the amazing Lisa a fellow Irish blogger and I couldn't let a statements post go by without featuring something of her's in there. She has a whole section on her website just dedicated to statements. This white and clear resin necklace is beautiful and can dress up any outfit.

A new take on a traditional style of statement necklace. This gold piece from Stella&Dot would look fabulous on anyone of any age!

Of course Willow&Clo had to be included as my favourite jewellery brand and the Lotus collection is just perfect for this season. It is so wearable and could be paired with any outfit. It also has matching earrings which are just as beautiful.

Last but not least is this statement bracelet/cuff from Stella&Dot, Its summer so why not go for brights. The mix of blues and turquoise make me think of sunny holidays where this accessories could carry you through from pool side to evening glam.

Have you been wearing any statement pieces recently?

I also just found out that I am shortlisted in the Company Magazine Style Blogger Awards in the Category 'Best Designed Blog' thank you so much for your support if you would like to see me in the finals please do vote HERE!  (I'm on the 3rd page as 'Love Life and Makeup').

You Organic Orange and Ylang Ylang Night Balm

Hey Everyone,
Recently I've seen more and more Irish brands getting on the organic natural skincare wagon and YouOrganic is no exception. A while back they sent me their all natural Night Balm to try. As a skincare addict I was very excited and with balms being so popular at the moment I was delighted to give this one a whirl.
As I mentioned YouOrganic creates natural skincare handmade in Dublin, it was founded in 2012 and in 2013 won Silver at The Sustainable Beauty Awards, Paris. Impressed yet? I tried the Night Balm with an RRP of €29.99, it contains ingredients like Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Vitamin E, Organic Neroli Essential Oil, and more. The balm can be used in a few different ways as a treatment for dry patches on the body, as a night balm for your face to help nourish and rejuvenate, and as an aftershave balm for men.
I used it in my evening skincare routine and applied a small amount to my face before bed. A little really does go a long way with this product. When squeezing it out of the tube, it comes out as a solid balm but meltvery fast into a nourishing oil. When I woke up in the morning my face felt so soft it was amazing, it also seemed slightly plumper like it was more hydrated than normal, I was very impressed. I've continued to use it once a week as a treatment and have even used it as a mask, wiping off any residue after about an hour of it on my skin and it worked amazingly well. I love that it contains no artificial fragrance, mineral oils, and isn't animal tested. The packaging is also really unique and complies with the brands natural organic feel, the only problem I found was that around the nozzle it did start to leak a little bit I'm not sure if that was because it got squashed in the post but I do try to keep mine upright now to stop it leaking, If you're a fan of bergamot scents you will love this product. I had expected it to smell like oranges however the smell is not too strong and smells more like a soft bergamot.

I would definitely recommend The Night Balm to skincare or balm lovers it does exactly what is says on  the tin and is very affordable for a 100% natural product!

What I Ate Wednesday #8

Hey Everyone,
here is my final 'What I Ate Wednesday' from my trip to Galway...
Breakfast: I was bold again (It was a holiday... It's aloud, right?) I had toasted sweet waffles with maybe just a little bit of chocolate spread.
Lunch: We were going for a large dinner so I suggested stopping in a little Café and getting a bun and tea rather than lunch. I had green tea and a small cupcake that I couldn't resist!

Dinner: Dinner was pretty epic I'm lucky I had small portions because I have no idea how I finished it all, needless to say I went for a nap after. We had a buffet dinner in the hotel and I picked the mushroom soup, Caesar salad with chicken, and then the roast beef with mash and Yorkshire pudding.
Desert: As if dinner wasn't enough already I couldn't not have a small slice of hazelnut brownie and cream when offered it.

What have you been eating this week?
